EKC Dover College – Wellbeing Centre Mural
Brief
EKC Dover College commissioned Caridade Studio to create a large-scale digital mural for the College's Wellbeing Centre, designed to inspire, comfort and create a welcoming environment for students. Rather than simply decorating the space, the artwork was intended to reflect the College's identity while celebrating the local landscape, encouraging students to feel connected to both their surroundings and one another.
The project began with a collaborative digital illustration workshop delivered to Art students. Through a series of creative drawing exercises, students explored themes of place, nature and wellbeing, producing a collection of visual ideas that became the foundation of the final mural. Their contributions ensured that the finished artwork genuinely belonged to the College community.
The Challenge
The challenge was to transform dozens of individual student drawings into a single cohesive composition that could be reproduced at architectural scale. Drawing inspiration from the visual language of comic books and sequential storytelling, I developed a panel-based composition that allows each symbol and illustration to contribute to a larger narrative about growth, resilience and belonging.
Every element within the mural was carefully chosen for its symbolic connection to Dover and wellbeing. The kingfisher represents the River Stour and renewal, while the raft becomes a metaphor for learning, support and navigating new experiences together. Hops celebrate Kent's rich agricultural heritage, apples symbolise growth and knowledge, and foxglove flowers introduce themes of nature, biodiversity and healing. Together, these motifs create a visual ecosystem that reflects both the local environment and the emotional journey of education.
The finished mural transforms the Wellbeing Centre into more than just a functional space. It becomes a place of reflection and optimism, where locally inspired storytelling, collaborative creativity and contemporary illustration come together to create an environment that students can feel proud to call their own.
